Aaargh! Why do builder and client have to be this way!
Published on May 28, 2005 By PurrBall In WinCustomize Talk

I've just started to use DX 3 alot now and am noticing how annoying switctching inbetween Builder and Client are. First, I have to bring up DX3's Welcome to switch to builder from client just to save the theme with an object removed. I should be able to save in Client. Next, all of the Load options should be on the systray icon's menu like it used to be in 2.x. Oh, and did I metion that I need to unload all of DX just to get into Client from Builder? There should be a switching option on the systray context menu also.

I hope Stardock thinks about these and the ease of use of their program.

Oh, and I found a bug: Sometimes in the object's properties box where the image is upposed to be theere is just a down arrow in a box. I noticed this on the banners on SDC once also.

Yep

I agree

I second that one too.

In the meantime you can set the Builder as the default program to handle DX-themes and desktops. (Start up the Builder > Configure DesktopX Builder > Preferences > "Make DesktopX Builder the default program for loading .dxpack and .desktops")

I also edited the shortcut in the startmenu to point to DesktopXBuilder.exe rather than to DesktopX.exe.

I dont like staying in builder becauseOn this powerless comp it seems to take up more memory and I dont need to customize it very much.

Lately, widgets have been loading with pieces missing. That's kind of annoying. I though widgets are compiled or something so that this sort of thing wouldn't happen.

Can you give an example of this? I haven't seen that.

Not sure how. I widget-ized my Player Buttons Object :https://www.wincustomize.com/ViewSkin.aspx?SID=1&SkinID=4011&LibID=3

If you look at the image, when I open the widget player, all the buttons are gone except the last 2

hmm..tried to link to that image, but no go.

Also, Gadgets seem to be brain-damaged, and cant remember their positions.

I was able to remedy my problem by clearing out all the caches from C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Stardock\DesktopX.

I have had the same thing happening. Also some of my widgets and objects will just stop working. I cannot get "live weather" to work at all either.

I haven't been able to get any of the recycle bin widgets to work. They always show empty.

Meowy - depends which version the gadget was made.

Regarding live weather - that depends on the weather feed. I think Weather.com recently changed their backend. I suspect a lot of weather widgets are not working.

I take it back, gadgets don't remember their position. That's gonna get fixed.

I just downloaded and tried out the player buttons. They seem to work fine here.

Live weather is working perfectly here.

Well, OD Launchpad especially needs to be fixed up a ton.

The Hide and close buttons on it are not aligned to each other, and you can not choose which proggies you want on it.

What I meant to say about "live weather" is that when I load the widget it flashes the widget on the screen for a second and then disappears. When I check the object list it's on there, but it does not show on the desktop.

Also, when the desktop returns from a screensaver, the widgets and objects also disappear. DesktopX is still running in the system tray, but the widgets are gone from the desktop.

I got the disappearing objects from widgets a lot, an example being calculator buttons would just go.

Stopped using DX3 as it has all the annoying bugs mentioned in this thread. Clearing the cache seems to fix a lot of them as it forces a reload of the widget, but still, you shouldn't have to.
