I found a few free ones, but they seem to not do what I need. Does anyone know of a good free one?

Using (or going to be) FC3. I think I might end up using the intaller's utility that comes with Fedora.

With one of the mini-distributions linked, you can probably get away with downloading only some 100MB or so. Though I suppose just the first fedora CD would be required.

It happens that I will need to download Knoppix and used the QtParted from there. Advice from Linux expertos. Who would have guessed this would be so difficult.

If only I had done it earlier.... If only... If only.......

If you boot Knoppix to the desktop, I believe you'll find it's going to mount the drives automatically. Which will stop the partitioning from working. unmount them first.

umount /mnt/*

What do you want it to do? I read this thread twice and still can't figure out what you were looking at doing with the software. Did you want to make a second partition for Linux? Or jsut mess with the windows partition?

If you wanted to do anything with the partitions. I would suggest "Partition Magic" that costs $70 for the current version. But it's worth the buy. I think it's one of the best piece of software to mess with partitions.

Why didn't I see the answer. I reread again. I saw you wanted to create a Linux partition. You could of created a non-formated partition using the Windows Disk Manager, then installed Linux in the empty partition.

using the Windows Disk Manager

How to do?

boot Knoppix to the desktop

Runs off from cd?

In Windows XP, it's under Administrative Tools -> Computer Management

You need free space on the HDD or another HDD (new) to repartition using XP tools without losing data. It will partition destructivly.

Look at www.acronis.com for Disk Director http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/diskdirector/ also includes a boot manager and several other programs. It works great. $49.99.

I always use PartitionMagic, since it can do on-the-fly creating and resizing without those reboots.

But if I were looking for a freeware app, Ranish would be top of the list: http://www.ranish.com/part/

Win is taking up my whole disk, but there is plenty of free space, so does that change the scenario?

Ranish: Looks quite good. In fact, I read the Linux dual-booting guide. I'll be getting this.
on Apr 11, 2005
I tried the guide, but I can't seem to be able to get my system to boot from the disk, I get a

'Non-system disk or disk error,
please replace disk and try again'

Any suggestions? I IO.sys, command.com, part.exe and chkdsk.exe on disk.

I am actually doing this so I can install Fedora Linux

If I understand you right, Windows is taking up your whole (probably "C") partition, and that you have unallocated, unformatted space left on your physical disk.

If that is the case, and you are wanting to use the unallocated space for a Linux partition, then most, if not all, of the popular Linux installs will detect the Windows partition, and ask if you want to install Linux to the unallocated space, or if you want it to over-write the Windows partition.
Obviously you will want to choose to install to the unallocated space on the drive.
Otherwise, I'd just bite the bullet and buy PartitionMagic. (or if you have a friend who has PartitionMagic, they could throw your HDD into their machine as a slave drive and partition it however you want)
