It may not be quite as easy as you think...

Update: yum makes life easier. To install a package, for exaple, The GIMP, you would go ito terminal and type 'yum install gimp' or for Firefox, 'yum install firefox' etc. No more web searching!!

Sorry if this is slow.

The links do not function because when I tried to copy the HTML code from Publisher it would not show in the proper area and would flood the whole site's page. Now it is just screenshots from Publisher put together.

I wouldn't recommend Fedora for first time users. Mandrake or Linspire would be a better choice.

Personally don't like Mandrake that much, and Linspire costs money, got bad reviews from PC World etc. etc.

Well Fedora is more for power users than new users. Linspire is still a bit cheaper than Windows. SuSE seems to be my choice right now.

Oh, did I say fedora is to newbies to PCs?

I meant that Fedora is good transition if you are a power user in Windows XP.

With minimal previous experience with Linux I found Fedora to be very easy to set up and use. There are a few "linux-centric" things to think about (like "Do I use KDE or Gnome GUI?"). Linspire and SuSE were probably a tad easier to set-up because most of the setup was performed automatically, but they essentially end up the same.

For an outright noob (neither a Windows power-user nor a previous linux-user) I'd certainly recommend getting one of the LiveCD's: Boots from a CD into Linux, doesn't touch your hard-drive(s) and generally contain plenty of linux software to try out- perfect for the Linux curious individual who just wants to see what it does.

Meowy- great article! Succinct, well-designed, and informative

Meowy.....when this thread was created you really messed with its format...I couldn't even click any response button at all.....

Don't get too 'ambitious' with the coding....there must have been an open tag somewhere...

No complainging to me...
Go over and complain to MS Publisher. I just took the code from the web preview.

Do I use KDE or Gnome GUI?

Gnome seems to be a good GUI.

Also, why I don't like Linspire is because to get some of the features you have to pay $$$. Example: I want GIMP. I go into CNR warehouse and it asks me to pay for a subscription to access these products. So, I have to pay to get GIMP. Darn. But in Fedora, I just go to 'Applications' and down to the prompt thingy and type 'yum install gimp' and then it finds GIMP and installs it without all of the hassle, or $$$.

You get what you pay for.

Fine...I'll take that as an apology for having to deal with it....

I would recommend putting Linux on a secondary drive.
